Indian Railways, with over 1.2 million employees, stands as the largest employer in India
New Delhi, 1st May 2025: The Northern Railway Mazdoor Union proudly and respectfully saluted all workers on the occasion of International Labour Day — a global observance that honors the dedication, rights, and essential contributions of workers across all sectors.
Indian Railways, with over 1.2 million employees, stands as the largest employer in India and one of the largest in the world. It is the backbone of the nation's transportation and infrastructure, and its workforce plays a crucial role in driving economic and social development.
Aligned with the United Nations’ Decent Work Agenda, which advocates fair treatment, workplace safety, and social protection for all workers, the Union reinforced its commitment to protecting and promoting the rights of railway employees.
A special Labour Day program was organized in Ghaziabad by the Delhi Division of the Northern Railway Mazdoor Union, under the leadership of Divisional Ministers Mr. Ramneek Sharma and Mr. Alok Prakash. A large gathering of railway employees attended the event, which focused on pressing issues such as workers’ rights, social security, and pension reforms.
Mr. B.C. Sharma, General Secretary of the Union, stated:
"Behind every train in motion lies the silent dedication of railway workers. Our Union has always stood for their rights and will continue to fight for fair wages, safety, and dignity."
He voiced strong opposition to the New Pension Scheme (NPS) and reiterated the Union’s demand:
"The youth of Indian Railways deserve the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). Our struggle, alongside NFIR and URMU, will persist until this demand is fulfilled."
Union President Mr. S.N. Malik added:
"Labour Day is not just a celebration — it is a day to reaffirm our resolve to fight for workers' rights at every level."
He called upon the government to restore the OPS and recognize the lifelong service of railway workers with appropriate social protection.
To mark the occasion, the Union organized rallies, seminars, and employee honour ceremonies across several divisions. These events raised awareness of the challenges faced by workers and amplified the call for dignified working conditions — in line with international labour standards.
The Northern Railway Mazdoor Union also urged the government to ensure:
Improved working conditions
Regular health check-ups
Affordable housing facilities
Timely and transparent salary disbursement
In conclusion, the Union called upon all workers to stay united, vigilant, and determined in their collective struggle for justice and equality.
"Unity of workers is the guarantee of social justice."
